Harris Tweed, or Harris Tweed Fabric - often referred to as Harris Tweed Hebrides

The only fabric in the world whose production is protected by an Act of Parliament, Harris Tweed is historic, iconic and highly fashionable, not to mention hard wearing!

All Harris Tweed is hand woven on a treadle loom by the weaver at his home. Each loom is the weaver’s own property and the craftsmen weavers work to the colour and design instructions. The tweed, which is approximately 85 yards long (78 metres) is returned to the mill for finishing (See Below)

Finishing the Harris Tweed Fabric

The finishing involves removing dirt, oil and impurities by washing. The pieces of Harris Tweed also pass through the skilled hands of the mending department where any loose ends and broken threads are rectified.

Various finishes can then be applied.

Harris Tweed Fabric Uses

Harris Tweed is traditionally associated with sporting clothes but you can now see Harris Tweed Fabric shaped into anything including suits, jackets and coats for men and women. This can be in both town and country styles applied to dresses, blouses, hats, luggage, furnishings and even slippers.

The Harris Tweed Hebrides comes only from the Isles of Lewis and Harris and with its quality and colour has made it a favourite choice for top designers throughout the World for many years. New colours and designs are created for the fashion market each season.
